The Tenth Annual Education Law Symposium, co-sponsored by NCEA and St. Catharine College was held in
Louisville, Kentucky from July 13-15th. Sr. Mary Angela Shaughnessey, SCN, PhD, JCD (Chief Counsel and Dean of the
Graduate
School at St. Catharine College) and Sr.
Dale McDonald , PBVM, PhD (NCEA Director of Public Policy) serve as co-chairs. For the first five years, Brother
Robert Bimonte , FSC ( NCEA Vice President) served as the NCEA co-chair of the program.
The symposium was attended by 129 educators from states spanning the nation
from Hawaii to New York as well as attendees from Belize and
Guam . General session presentations focused on legal case updates, the intersection of canon and civil law, and an "Ask the Lawyers" panel that featured five attorneys responding to participant questions. The breakout sessions covered topics dealing with legal concerns around social media and cyberbullying, personnel, school health, and child custody issues as well as special education, legally sound handbooks, and board governance.
A celebratory special tenth anniversary liturgy and dinner offered tributes and thanksgiving for the continued success of the education law symposium and for the enthusiastic participation of the learned presenters and participants.
The Eleventh Annual Education Law Symposium will take place next year from July 11-14, 2013 at the Brown Hotel in
Louisville, Kentucky.
