NCEA Welcomes Director of Catechetic Assessments

John Galvan, director of schools for the Diocese of San Diego will lead NCEA IFG/ACRE

Leesburg, VA – The National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) welcomes John Galvan to the association as the director of Catechetic Assessments, overseeing the important assessment tools of Information for Growth (IFG) and Assessment of Child Religious Education (ACRE). At its core, IFG/ACRE assists in the evaluation of catechetical/religious education programs in Catholic schools and parishes across the country. Currently, it is the only tool that provides national scores for comparison and processes for tracking religious education program data over time. John’s responsibility will be to grow the use and understanding of the importance of these assessments to provide school-based data on national, regional and diocesan levels. John will join NCEA at the end of the 2021 – 2022 school year.

"John’s devotion to Catholic education has been a hallmark of his work at the diocesan level," said NCEA President/CEO Lincoln Snyder. "He understands the tireless efforts of faith formation and embraces the teaching mission of the Catholic Church. NCEA is excited to have his commitment to grow IFG/ACRE as the vital tools that will help assess the six dimensions of adult faith formation and the strengths and weaknesses of religious education programs."

John has been the director of schools for the Diocese of San Diego for eight years. In this, his last year as director, the Diocese of San Diego has seen one of the largest increases in student enrollment in the country. While John’s Catholic education began at Holy Trinity Catholic School in El Cajon, CA, his educational path has earned the following degrees: B.A. in art, M.A. in practical theology, and an M.Ed. in educational leadership & administration.

John has spent nearly 30 years in different facets of public and Catholic education. Prior to his formal work in Catholic education, John was a seminarian for the Diocese of San Diego, spending nearly three years of graduate theological study at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. From there, John worked as a Catholic high school administrator, teacher, coach and campus minister. He has served on local, state and national committees and boards to advance the mission of Catholic education. In his first profession, he worked as a professional illustrator, working as part of the creative team for San Diego Unified School District.

John is happily married with a beautiful daughter, and his family resides on a horse ranch in San Diego’s north county.
