2021-2022 Highlights


Enrollment:

  • Total Catholic school student enrollment for the current academic year is 1,688,417.
  • 1,167,917 in elementary/middle schools; 520,500 in secondary schools.
  • Student diversity: 21.5% are racial minorities, 18.6% are Hispanic/Latino and 7.1% were reported as unknown in the racial data collection.
  • Non-Catholic enrollment is 342,950 which is 20.3% of the total enrollment.

Schools:

  • There are 5,938 Catholic schools: 4,765 elementary; 1,173 secondary.
  • 20 new schools opened; 71 consolidated or closed.*
  •  2,201 schools have a waiting list for admission.
  • Coeducational schools comprise 98.6% of elementary and 72.1% of secondary schools.  At the secondary level, 12.4% of the schools are male and 15.5% are female.

*The reported number of schools closed includes some that consolidated and re-opened as new entities. The total reported opened is 20 which includes newly built as well as the reconfigured entities.  Excluding virtual schools, which were included in the data collection for the first time in 2021-2022, the net loss of elementary schools is 50 and the number of secondary schools remained steady.

Professional Staff:

  • Full-time equivalent professional staff numbered 146,088 with 97.4% Laity and 2.6% Religious/Clergy.   
  • The student/teacher ratio is 11.6:1.

College Graduation:

  • Catholic high school graduation rate is 98% with 85.2% of graduates attending 4-year colleges.
